School Orchestra Surprises 5-Year-Old Girl with Cancer by Turning Story About Her Journey into a Performance

Quincy Fitzgerald was diagnosed with leukemia in 2022

A young girl with cancer was gifted a special surprise by a high school orchestra.

Earlier this month, Quincy Fitzgerald, 5, was presented with a performance by the North Kansas City High School that was based on a short story she and her older sister wrote about her journey with her illness.

Brought to the school's attention by The Sing Me A Story Foundation, an organization of songwriters that bring children's stories to life with music, the group worked with local hospital Children’s Mercy and orchestra director Sheree Yoder to make the idea a reality.

Local composer Jeremy Lister then teamed up with the school and foundation and created a musical composition inspired by the young girl's story that was performed at the school's spring concert, which she and her family attended.

The musical piece, titled "Many Sides of the Portal," took Lister about two months to complete, KWTX reported.

Speaking with the outlet, Katie Fitzgerald, Quincy's mom, reacted to the gesture and said, "It just kind of gives you hope, and it gives you comfort."

“You get this type of diagnosis, and you don’t know,” she continued. “When you see others come out of the woodwork and just kind of lift you up, it’s really incredible.”

According to a GoFundMe page, Quincy was diagnosed with leukemia in 2022.
