Scavenger hunts, history tours, community weaving: May events at Heritage State Park

FALL RIVER — The warmer weather is beckoning. Now is the perfect time to get outside and explore the city's waterfront, and Heritage State Park.

The Visitor Center is located at 100 Davol St., in the Cap. Thomas J. Hudner Jr. Memorial Building.

All programs are free and open to the public; an adult must accompany children. Free parking is available in the lot at 5 Water St. For more information, call 508-675-5759, Ext. 0.

Scavenger hunts and word games

Daily, Visitor Center lobby, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Scavenger hunts and word games put you on the path to discovering the people and stories that are woven together to create the rich tapestry of Fall River's history. Choose from "Find That Flag" scavenger hunt; "Textile Capital of America" scavenger hunt; "Follow the Taunton River" word puzzle; and coded secret messages and word mazes. Free. All materials are provided.

Water + Granite + Gravity = Fall River

Friday to Sunday, from 11 to 11:30 a.m.

This guided tour meets at the Visitor Center desk. Walk through the park on a journey through history, guided by a Park Interpreter. This 30-minute walk connects the park's wayfinders. Information is available at the front desk.

Film: "The Fabric of Fall River"

Explore Fall River's rich past in this 30-minute film. For ages 8 and up.

Film: "The Fall River Line"

Daily, available on demand (ask staff)

Climb aboard and experience the famous Fall River Line, ships from a bygone age. Run-time is 57 minutes.

Film: "Safe Houses: Fall River and the Underground Railroad"

Daily, available on demand (ask staff)

Discover the hidden history of Fall River and its role in the Underground Railroad, as well as the local abolitionists, especially women, who helped enslaved people on their journey to freedom. Run-time is 20 minutes.

Road to Revolution: The Stamp Tax Crisis of 1765

Daily through May 31, Visitor Center exhibit hall

On loan from the Commonwealth Museum and Secretary of State, see how the Stamp Act created a firestorm of protest and debate about the identity of colonists as "Americans."

Faces of Fall River

Explore a selection of historic Fall River photographs, featuring the work of Lewis Hine, whose photographs of children in Fall River cotton mills helped galvanize the nation against child labor.

"People, Ambition, Hard Work"

This self-guided tour features a Portuguese-American poet, a beloved local entrepreneur, a decorated military hero, and a visionary state legislator. All of them have their names enshrined in Heritage State Park. Learn more about them on this walking tour. Find information at the front desk.

Creation Station Activities

Stop by the Visitor Center and grab a unique coloring sheet of moments in Fall River history. Help complete the calico stamp wall or even weave a row on the community loom. If you complete an entire row, you can add your name to the tapestry. This is a drop-in program, suitable for all ages.
