‘These are very scary times’: Brett Kavanaugh controversy unleashes revealing Yahoo comments

“How did our country become so divided?”

Yahoo readers’ comments on Brett Kavanaugh are pouring in, now in the tens of thousands and multiplying by the second. Many stand by the Supreme Court nominee, while others express support for the women who have accused him of sexual assault. But certain emotions seem to unite them all: disgust, fear, as well as the question: How did we get here?

One such comment, generating hundreds of likes, comes from user JoeO:

“These are some very scary times we are living in. Just listen to what is being said, watch what is being done…if it doesn’t make you at least a bit concerned, I don’t know what will.”

President Trump’s nominee to replace departing Justice Anthony Kennedy has been accused by Christine Blasey Ford, a California professor, that Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a party when they were both in high school, and a Yale classmate has also come forward to accuse him of sexual assault. Further allegations that he was a heavy drinker in college have followed.

Kavanaugh’s defiant stance in an interview with Fox News on Monday, arguing that “I will not be intimidated into leaving the process” was well received by many posting Yahoo comments. “[That’s] good news [don’t] give in stay strong judge,” wrote one. Another commented: “I [can’t] wait till he is confirmed so I can watch yet another liberal meltdown.”

At the other end of the spectrum came this comment: Time to pull the nomination, if there are two accusations there are probably more. Trump has in the area of 16 accusations. This behavior has no limitations.”

One other Yahoo comment is one we can all hopefully get behind: “The truth will prevail.”
