Our skin care routines have simultaneously gotten simpler yet far more involved over the last few years. If you’re using less products, you expect those products to work twice as hard with active ingredients that are both good for you and the planet. So if you’re a fan of celebrity beauty launches and a lover of the essentials, Scarlett Johansson’s new skincare line, The Outset, might just be what you’ve been searching for.

The Black Widow star and Oscar-nominated actress partnered with beauty and fashion executive Kate Foster Lengyel on a skincare debut that is all about going back to the basics. The Outset, available now, straddles the space among drugstore, French pharmacy, and American prestige apothecary brands. Its manifesto wants customers to “find freedom in the uncomplicated.” The collection launch consists of five core products: a cleanser ($32), serum ($46), moisturizer ($44), night cream ($54), and eye cream ($42). A lip lotion ($28) is scheduled to launch later. This lineup of clean, cruelty-free products aims to break away from complicated routines and offers everyday essentials for all skin types. It was designed to be effective, accessible, and gender neutral.

What’s inside this curated collection? Each product features a different assortment of ingredients including antioxidant fruit blends, vegan collagen, squalane, and bakuchiol, but Hyaluroset Complex is the signature ingredient that is the common denominator in all of them. This star ingredient is said to act as a botanical alternative to hyaluronic acid and features the seeds of the cassia angustifolia, a plant native to India. The benefits: The signature complex touts lasting hydration and plumper, softer skin.

Johansson tells Women's Wear Daily that launching with skincare was always her first choice. "I love color, fragrance, and skincare. This is going to sound kind of esoteric, but I really meditated on it a lot and spent a lot of time thinking about it. I kept coming back to the idea of skincare because I had problem skin for a very long time that I felt self-conscious about," the actress tells WWD. "[Skincare] was just very much the base of the rest of my beauty routine and if I wasn’t feeling good about my skin, no amount of hair or makeup or glamour would make that feeling go away.”

If you’re curious about how Johansson herself might use her own collection, meet the Daily Essentials three-step regimen. It consists of the Gentle Micellar Antioxidant Cleanser, Firming Vegan Collagen Prep Serum, and the Nourishing Squalane Daily Moisturizer, and is inspired by her own daily routine to keep her skin hydrated and balanced.

While The Outset launches today, the brand plans to debut low-waste refill pouches this summer for the trio of products making up the Daily Essentials Regimen. It will also be available at Sephora starting next month.
