It might be a while before we see the long-awaited reboot of Scarface. That’s because the director previously attached to the project has now moved onto other things.

That man was Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria), who revealed his change of direction in an interview with The Hindu: “I am not working on Scarface anymore,” Guadagnino said.

Many names have been linked with Scarface over the years, from Star Wars: Andor lead Diego Luna in the film’s starring role, to Joel and Ethan Coen on scriptwriting duties.

It’s not the first time Scarface has been rebooted, however. The 1983 Brian De Palma film was itself a remake of Howard Hawks’ 1932 film starring Paul Muni, which chronicled the life of a Prohibition-era gangster.

Guadagnino is unlikely to return to the project, but he’s got more than enough to keep him busy, including Grand Slam tennis drama Challengers (set to launch April 2024), and an adaptation of holocaust novel Wartime Lies.

In other reboot news, the Scott Pilgrim cast are returning for a Netflix anime series.
