We're not sure how anyone kept their cool before AirTags. Having one of these quarter-sized tech gadgets stashed in your luggage, dangling from your keys, or embedded in your wallet helps ensure you always know the whereabouts of your easiest-to-lose things. Once you've paired your iPhone with an AirTag, you can track it around the clock, anywhere you go.
Because AirTags are an always-on piece of technology (they don't come with an off button), you might be wondering, "Do AirTags need to be charged?" or even "How long does an AirTag's battery last?"
Luckily, the steps are simple. Here's what you need to know about AirTag battery replacement and duration.
Does an AirTag need to be charged?
It's important to know that AirTags use a CR2032 coin cell battery, which is not rechargeable. When your AirTag's battery power is low, you will need to replace it with a new battery.
Conveniently, the Find My app will send you a push notification when your AirTag's battery reaches a low-power level.
To check your AirTag's current battery level, open the Find My app on your iPhone. Under the "Items" section, tap on the name of your connected AirTag, and a display of the device's battery level will appear. If your AirTag's power is dwindling, you will see the words "Low Battery" under your device name.
How does AirTag battery replacement work?
An AirTag's battery lasts about a year, per Apple's website — around this time, you'll want to have a replacement battery ready to install in your device. Luckily, swapping out your AirTag's battery is simple and should take less than a minute to do.
With the AirTag's mirrored side face-up, press down with both thumbs and turn left. The cover should pop off, revealing the battery inside. Once you change out the battery, put the cover back on, turning it to the right to lock it in place.
