Scandal Star Tony Goldwyn Stood Up for Planned Parenthood in the Most Awesome Way

During awards season, celebrities like Emma Stone and Lola Kirke took to wearing pins over their couture gowns to make a statement. Knowing that these images are broadcast all over the world, their decision to let their clothes do the talking was just as effective—if not more—than doing countless interviews.
On the closing day of Paleyfest in Hollywood on Sunday, Scandal star (and fictional POTUS) Tony Goldwyn decided to follow their lead with a small gold Planned Parenthood pin. Although Planned Parenthood thankfully won't lose its funding now that the American Health Care Act failed to receive enough votes, PP will likely face financial uncertainty when the House of Representatives votes on next year's budget. In other words, the organization isn't out of the woods yet. And that's why Goldwyn is committed to speaking out about the importance of Planned Parenthood, especially for those that think making abortion illegal will save lives.
“There’s been a lot of disinformation about Planned Parenthood and the focus of the lifesaving work that they do for women’s healthcare," Goldwyn told Glamour. "I saw a much publicized image of all those white men sitting around in a room at the White House talking about what should be done about women’s healthcare, and I thought I would step up [by wearing this and speaking out]. If Planned Parenthood is defunded, millions of women—particularly women struggling economically—are going to be in serious trouble. And the truth is, there will be far more abortions performed—and unsafe ones as a result. The people that are anti-abortion actually are sabotaging their own moral stance by taking this position.”
Not only is Goldwyn right, but there's an added benefit to safe and responsible abortion access. The Journal of the American Medical Association noted last year that women who are denied abortion access are more likely to experience anxiety and low self-esteem than women who successfully have the procedure. But as we've pointed out numerous times, abortion constitutes just three percent of Planned Parenthood's services, and except in cases of rape, incest, or severe threat to a mother's life, no federal money is used to fund abortion services. But cutting federal funding for PP would put access to breast exams, Pap tests, colposcopy procedures, HPV vaccines, reversible contraception procedures, pregnancy tests, STI tests, and HIV tests at risk.
So keep wearing that pin and speaking out, Tony Goldwyn. In the meantime, I'll be over here, buying my own PP pin.
