Scammers Said Meghan Markle Endorsed a Diet Pill. Buckingham Palace Shut Them Down.
A pair of websites have been peddling wild claims about some diet pills. Fake quotes from Meghan Markle—and in one case, an entire fake interview—position the weight loss pills as the Duchess's go-to products.
The Mirror uncovered this online campaign, and asked Buckingham Palace to comment. The Palace "vowed to crack down," per the Mirror. A royal source added, "This is obviously not true and an illegal use of the Duchess’ name for advertising purposes. We will follow our normal course of action."
The campaign included fake "before" and "after" photos of Meghan, and a bizarre fabricated interview, which has the Duchess claim to choose her passion for weight loss over the royal family.
"The Royal Family is not happy with me splitting my time up," it reads, per the Mirror. "They made me decide on which direction I was going to focus on the future. Being so turned off by the reaction of their power move I have decided to pursue my new weight loss line and dream."
The incident is somewhat reminiscent of a recent palace denial related to Kate Middleton. A doctor suggested on social media that Kate had had "baby Botox." The post featured supposed "before" and "after" images, purporting to show the effects of the cosmetic procedure.
Kensington Palace swiftly condemned the Instagram post as "categorically not true," adding, "in addition, the Royal Family never endorse commercial activity."
For their part, the doctor's clinic backtracked—kind of. "He just wanted to show the transformation that it can create and obviously how it can be used for subtle results and how it’s really good for anti-aging," a spokesperson said of the post. But she refused to confirm that Kate wasn't a client of the clinic's, saying, "We have non-disclosure agreements where we can’t disclose our high-end clients. We absolutely can’t comment at all that she has come to us."
