“An icon is someone who inspires others—through fashion, through music, through your personality, through your perseverance. I’ve always admired the women that came before me, my own icons, because they helped me become the woman I am today.

Someone who is a true icon to me, and probably millions of other people, is Cher. I shot my M.A.C campaign with her. She was so generous, so beautiful. She shined so bright. One thing that she taught me was Take your time, but keep going. No matter where you’re at, keep going. Sometimes, I do feel like giving up. But I know that if she did it, I could do it too. I see a lot of myself in her.

I feel like I’ve made it when a fan writes me a letter and they correlate an experience between a song that I put out [and something that happened to them]. It really makes me feel good. Because what good is all this fame, this notoriety, if you’re not helping people? It warms my heart when I hear stories about my music getting someone through a hard exam period, a bad breakup, a time when they were feeling low. I know what it feels like to be that little girl who struggles and who needs music for therapy and for inspiration.”
