Let's be honest: the Saw franchise has had its ups and downs. The body horror franchise created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell first premiered with a solid cast (Cary Elwes, Ken Leung, and Danny Glover starred) and a decent overarching plot balanced with notable scares. But after the first three films–when Wan and Whannell departed as writers on the franchise–quality arguably dropped.

Of coursem every film delivered some stellar traps and games and provided a bit of mystery as victims and detectives worked to discover who was running each game, but as new writers joined onto the series and retconned in various new characters and arcs, Saw sat on shaky ground. Add in the two recent entries, Jigsaw and Spiral, neither of which gave the franchise a strong chance of a solid reboot, and you can understand why the franchise hasn't had the same cultural impact as it used to; to this day, people still talk about the bear trap in Saw, or the pit of syringes.

So it's a breath of fresh air to see, finally, that Saw X is putting the franchise back on the right track. Serving as a prequel set between Saw and Saw II, the film brings back familiar faces and delivers much of what people wanted from the previous entries. In fact, it's not controversial to say Saw X could be the best entry to the franchise ever.

Due to its positive reception, will there be more coming down the pipeline for Saw? And if so, will the new films be more prequels, or perhaps bring in new faces and build on the film's existing lore to make something new? Here's what we know.

Will Saw X Have a Sequel?

Possibly. The film is set at an interesting chronological point in the series, where the events of Saw II already foretell what's to come, along with the rest of the franchise's events. The success of Saw X could certainly mean more movies, but whether or not that means a direct continuation of where Saw X left off is unclear. The future of the franchise all depends on its box office success.

What Will Saw XI be about?

In a post-credits scene to Saw X, the film revealed the return of Mark Hoffman, one of John's apprentices from previous films. Writers Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger revealed they're planning for a movie centered on Hoffman.

Of course, that all depends on if Stolberg and Goldfinger get the green light for another film.

Who will star in Saw XI?

Tobin Bell (who plays John Kramer/Jigsaw) appears in almost all of the Saw films in flashbacks, save for Spiral, where he appeared only in photographs. It's safe to say if Bell is up for it, he could have a return in the next Saw film.

If Stolberg and Goldfinger stick to the plan of a Hoffman film, we'll also see the return of actor Costas Mandylor. Beyond that, we'll have to see what else the writers decide to bring back from the past.
