'Saved By the Bell' and 'Punky Brewster' Are Headed For Wild Reboots
Just as oversized blazers and high-waisted jeans have reemerged as trends straight from the '80s, so too are a pair of nostalgic TV shows. Deadline reports that both Saved By the Bell and Punky Brewster will be revived at NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service.
Launching April 2020, the two series will involve some of their OG cast members. Elizabeth Berkley (Jessie Spano) and Mario Lopez (A.C. Slater) are both set to return to Bayside High with 30 Rock's Tracey Wigfield writing and executive producing. While additional alumni have yet to be announced, an official plot description, per The Hollywood Reporter, suggests Zack Morris's return in a surprising role:
"When California Gov. Zack Morris (the role memorably played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar) gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools, he proposes they send the affected students to the highest performing schools in the state – including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the over privileged Bayside kids a much needed and hilarious dose of reality."
Punky Brewster's original star Soleil Moon Frye will also be involved in her series' respective reboot. The plot released today sees the former precocious kid becoming a potential foster parent herself:
"In this multicamera/hybrid continuation of the iconic '80s sitcom about a bright young girl raised by a foster dad, Punky is now a single mother of three trying to get her life back on track when she meets a young girl who reminds her a lot of her younger self. Soleil Moon Frye reprises the role that made her famous."
The two latest revivals join a reboot of Battlestar Galactica for Peacock that will be executive produced by Mr. Robot's Sam Esmail. No word yet on if Saved By the Bell: The College Years will be considered canon, although we kind of hope so?
