It’s a big day for Today’s Savannah Guthrie! This morning, the NBC anchor returned to the show after a month-long absence following an accident that led to a torn retina. The anchor temporarily lost sight in her right eye when her 3-year-old son (innocently) threw a toy train at her face.

“When I say ‘Good to see you,’ I really mean it,” Guthrie said to Today viewers. “I gotta tell you, it feels so good to have you sitting right here,” co-anchor Hoda Kotb responded.

Guthrie underwent retinal surgery in December to repair her torn retina. She’s been keeping fans updated on her recovery, which was “uniquely challenging” for the anchor, who had to sit facedown for nearly three weeks. “Your body starts hurting in different places, lying down like that,” Guthrie told People.

But it seems like things are looking promising for the 48-year-old. Guthrie shared photos of her before-and-after retinal surgery X-rays to Instagram, along with a warning to her followers about the potentially “gross” photos.

The first picture was of the anchor’s right eye before her surgery. She wrote in her caption that the "big dark spot in the middle" of the photo is the massive tear she suffered. The following photo was her “smooth as butter" retina after her doctors had successfully reattached it during retinal surgery.

Although Guthrie told People that she had lost most of her vision because her “retinal tear had deteriorated sharply,” the anchor remains “very hopeful” about getting most of her vision back following retinal surgery. “Here’s to 20/20 in 2020!” she closed the caption.

Kotb wasn’t the only one thrilled to have Guthrie back on the show. Fans flooded Guthrie’s Instagram post with messages of good luck and gratitude that she’s feeling well enough to return to the show.

“Welcome back! So happy to hear that all went well with your surgery and you are on the road to a full recovery,” one of her followers wrote, while another commented, “Happy to see you! 🤗 Thanks for sharing. So glad it turned out well! 💖💐”

On December 27, the Today anchor celebrated her 48th birthday and shared a heartwarming Instagram post about how grateful she feels at this stage of her life.

“My kids and my husband are my beating heart. My mom and sis and brother are my life. My dear departed Dad is always with me. My friends old and new and near and far have made me the happiest and luckiest and smiliest and most beloved year after year,” she wrote in the caption.

Guthrie also thanked her Today coworkers, referring to them as “devoted and awe inspiring,” and said her faith has gotten her through “many tears and disappointment” this year.
