  • Savannah Guthrie opened up about her frustrations of parenting at home while social distancing amid coronavirus.

  • The Today anchor said she’s snapped at her kids more than ever.

  • Savannah is encouraging her family to let out their emotions during this challenging time.

After experiencing a mild sore throat and runny nose, Today’s Savannah Guthrie has been working remotely from her basement studio since last week—and she’s starting to feel the stress that many parents can relate to at the moment.

Speaking to Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, Savannah got real about mom life while social distancing during a pandemic. “I really feel like I’ve actually kind of snapped at my kids more in the last seven days than I have in their entire lives,” she told them. “I think because even though we’re trying to keep it pretty cool and even-handed, they sense that something’s different.”

In one instance, her daughter Vale started to cry about missing school, her friends, and recess. “It just kind of broke my heart,” Savannah said.

But she’s encouraging her kids to express their emotions. “I’m like, ‘You tell me more about that, what else do you miss?’” she said to Vale in the moment. “Let’s hear it, let’s get it out. Do you have any more tears to cry? Let’s all cry.’ And then let’s move on. And I think sometimes we need to do that.”

Savannah has been doing a number of activities to keep her kids busy at home, like listening to music, doing board games, and spending a little time outside.

And she’s also gotten pretty creative with play time. During a Today segment, Savannah told Hoda that she’s been practicing to audition as an Olympic announcer while her kids perform “stunts” on the trampoline. “File under: trying to wear out my toddlers,” she captioned the clip on Instagram.

Like Savannah, Jenna agreed that being stuck at home has been difficult. “We’ve been staying home, and I have to say, it’s been a journey,” Jenna said. “It really has, because at the beginning, we weren’t used to seeing each other for this much time. Last night, Henry said, ‘We’re a team now,’ and I feel like that. There’s been moments that are messy, quite literally, like tons of laundry but really beautiful moments, too.”

The Today with Hoda & Jenna host has been homeschooling her girls, Poppy and Mila. “I emailed Poppy’s teacher, and I just said ... ‘I don’t know how you did it, how you keep this child entertained,’” she said.

Then, she got emotional about the effects of spending so much time indoors. “Yesterday, I have to say we put on more screen time than I’ve ever allowed myself. And you know what’s so funny, there was this one day I raised my voice, I was down on myself for the way I was acting towards Henry, honestly, the way I was acting towards the kids,” she said.

But in the end, it was her kids who lifted her mood. “They were like, ‘This is the best! We get mommy and daddy at home for dinner every night!’ And I was so hard on myself ... I just thought, our kids just want us and even not in our perfect ways,” she said.
