Yep, you read that right. Queen of Funny Ellen DeGeneres and Queen of Vampire Slaying Sarah Michelle Gellar are teaming up for a new TV show based on a psychological thriller.(And we feel like this is the celeb pairing we never knew we needed.)
The forthcoming show, called Sometimes I Lie, marks Gellar's big return to TV after a five-year hiatus (Gellar starred in two one-season shows, The Crazy Ones and Ringer, that never achieved the same Buffy-level following).
Sometimes I Lie is helmed by DeGeneres and Warner Brothers TV and is currently in pre-production. Gellar, 42, will executive produce and star as main character Amber Reynolds.
PureWow sat down with the Cruel Intentions star on behalf of her partnership with Colgate Optic White to chat about her next big project.
"It was one of the most exciting books I had read in a very long time," Gellar gushed, referring to the debut novel by former BBC journalist Alice Feeney that the show will be adapted from.
Feeney's psychological thriller centers on a woman who wakes up in a hospital bed from a coma with no recollection of how she got there, and Gellar knew she wanted DeGeneres and her company, A Very Good Production, on board for the small-screen adaptation.
"They loved it," Gellar said, and revealed what it's really like working with the daytime talk show host.
"Ellen's an 800-pound gorilla," the mom of two joked. "You wanna get something done, she does it."
Exhibit A: Gellar said DeGeneres's production team asked her who would be the dream writer for the book's TV adaptation.
"As a joke, I said Robin Swicord," Gellar admitted, thinking Swicord was someone "there's no chance in the world I would ever get." The screenwriter is revered in the TV and movie world for her book-to-screen adaptations, having penned the screenplays for Memoirs of a Geisha, The Jane Austen Book Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the 1994 version of Little Women and Matilda, among others.
"'When pigs fly' would be my reaction if you had told me it would happen," Gellar said.
Lo and behold, DeGeneres did make it happen, and Gellar was and is still absolutely over the moon.
"That's the difference of having someone with [Ellen's] power behind you."
We expected nothing less from the lady who's already met royal baby Archie, TBH...
