As much as I love the latest, greatest, boldest, coolest trends of the moment, they’re not always the most practical. Or, even if it is totally suitable for the outside world, I’ll wear it a few times, but I always tend to fall back on my tried-and-trues that simply can’t be replaced. I know you have yours, and for me, my go-to boots are going to be a hard one to knock out of the top spot. Any guesses as to which shoes I’m talking about?

I’ll give you a hint: Sarah Jessica Parker just wore them. The actress was photographed out and about in London on a chilly Friday evening, looking winter-ready and still oh-so-chic. That’s probably because SJP is inherently chic, which means she can wear anything and look like a million bucks. Her latest look is very low-key, consisting of skinny jeans, an oversized parka coat that’s clearly needed this time of year, a gray beanie, tinted, aviator sunglasses, her go-to crossbody bag ideal for carrying, well, everything, and those black suede, zip-front boots that are a true seasonal classic that will never, ever go out of style.

If you know me, you’ll know I have a thing for footwear. My shoe closet is overflowing with styles from chunky sneakers to cowboy boots to sky-high platforms, but the picks I wear the most often? Simple back boots à la Parker. And there’s a reason for that: because the style is incredibly easy to wear, ultra versatile, and never, ever goes out of style. I like bold trends, but I like easy ones all the more, because easy is just the way I prefer to go these days.

While beige suede boots have proven to be quite the hot footwear commodity these days, I say there’s always room for simple black boots — because while others styles might come and go, black boots are forever. Whenever I’m in a shoe rut, I know I can fall back on my trusty black options, as they pair well with jeans, skirts, trousers, dresses, and more. Not to mention, they’re totally suitable for all-season wear, from the obvious fall and winter to spring to summer, too.

SJP wore her front-zip boots with skinny jeans — and yes, it appears as though she tucked the denim into her footwear, a practical move that ensures the hem of the pants stays dry even in the snowiest conditions. But, regardless of how you wear your black boots, just know that they’re the no-fail grounding element to anything. And that’s why I wear mine religiously.
