Sarah Ferguson In Talks to Turn Her Debut Novel Into A Bridgerton-Style Series
Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, is releasing her first novel next month, and she's already in talks to turn the book into a Bridgerton-inspired series.
Per Variety, the Duchess is working on a script treatment for her historical novel, Her Heart For A Compass, and is in conversation with streaming platforms. "[Her team] is already in talks with at least one streaming service and will be approaching others once a 360-degree treatment of the book is finalized,” a source said. “These will include Amazon and Netflix. Everyone involved is looking at the success of Bridgerton as a demonstration of the immense appeal of period drama on streaming services.”
Ferguson co-wrote Her Heart For A Compass with her longtime collaborator Marguerite Kaye, and based the historical romance on the life of her own great-great aunt, Lady Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott. "I wanted to write a novel for years and years and was searching for the right story," the Duchess told People recently. "I was looking into my family history and I was struck by the fact that we shared a name: Margaret is my middle name. Since very little more information was easily found about her, it seemed she would be an ideal vehicle for me to weave my story around." She added, "The book refers to journeys Lady Margaret makes to Ireland and America, which in fact reflects my own personal journeys."
The potential streaming adaptation isn't Ferguson's first foray into scripted drama—she produced the 2009 movie The Young Victoria, which starred Emily Blunt in the title role of Queen Victoria during her early reign.
Her Heart For A Compass will be published by William Morrow in the US and Mills & Boon in the UK, and will be released on August 3.
