Sandra Oh Enhances Her Natural Curls With This $40 Curling Iron

It's well-established that 2019 is The Year of Curly Bangs. Thanks to celebrities like Natasha Lyonne, Yara Shahidi, and Sandra Oh, it seems we've finally figured out that you don't need to straighten your hair to look fabulous with fringe. But according to Oh's stylist, Ted Gibson, although she has naturally curly hair, she gets a little help from some strategic heat styling to make her bangs — and the rest of her gorgeous curls — look their absolute best.

In a new interview with Elle, Gibson — who was responsible for Oh's amazing award-show season looks — explains that while Oh's natural hair texture is amazing on its own, he uses a curling iron to perfect her loose ringlets. "A tong is my best friend. You're only as good as the tools that you use. If you want great hair you have to have great tools," he says, explaining that he goes around Oh's head, switching between a one-inch and 1.5-inch iron to get polished yet natural-looking, bouncy curls.

And you may be surprised to learn that great tools don't necessarily equal expensive tools, in Gibson's opinion. In fact, he recommends the Professional Marcel Iron by Hot Tools, which comes in six sizes and ranges from just $40 to $49. It has 10 heat settings up to 430 degrees, and the Marcel format lets you lock and unlock the clamp at will (as opposed to relying on spring-loaded clamps), so it's especially ideal for those who feel pretty confident wielding a hot tool.

Once Oh's hair is curled, Gibson gives it more softness and sheen with Shooting Star Texture Meringue from his own Starring line of hair products. "If you use it on dry hair, it gives this kind of matte, shiny texture that helps to control frizz, it helps to get that bounce," he told Elle of the foam-like formula, which he has also used on Priyanka Chopra and Lupita Nyong'o.

There's no need to cut bangs to get the most out of these products, of course, but if you're feeling the itch to try curly fringe, heed the advice Gibson gave Allure and make sure your stylist trims them while your hair is dry and holds smaller-sized shears vertically while cutting.
