Sandra Bullock Responds to Rumors That She Got Cheek Fillers Before the 2018 Oscars

After her appearance at the 2018 Oscars, fans wondered if Sandra Bullock had gotten face fillers. Now, she says she was sick and had allergies.

When it comes to beauty, sometimes it can seem like you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. That's likely how Sandra Bullock was feeling after her appearance at the Oscars earlier this year when fans watching the show questioned whether the star had gotten face fillers. Bullock, who walked the red carpet in a black and gold Louis Vuitton dress and wore her long hair silky-smooth and parted in the middle, was there to present an award and promote her new film, Oceans 8, but as so often happens, many folks only wanted to speculate about her face, as reported by New Beauty.

At the time, tweets came rolling in questioning whether Bullock "stuffed her face" with fillers, but now, she's addressing those rumors head-on. Bullock stuns on the cover of a new issue of InStyle, and in the full-length interview, she talks about everything from adoption to social media to the cheek filler rumors of earlier this year. She told InStyle that she didn't get fillers at all, but was actually not feeling well and decided to go anyway, saying, "This past Oscars I was sick and had allergies, but I was like, 'I’m just going to go. It’s part of my job, and I’m happy to be there.'"

She did her job well, especially for someone dealing with sickness and allergies. However, the next day, when she saw the reaction online to her slightly puffy face, she was affected by it. She told the magazine, "I am affected by it because I don’t feel confident when I dress up and go on the red carpet. I’m not that person who knows how to work it. I try to channel Beyoncé. I do the same pose every time. I try not to dread that kind of stuff, but I do get incensed and think, 'How can they write this?'"

The initial reaction from fans also underscores the pressures women face in Bullock's industry. There's a huge pressure to look a certain way, and often that look is maintained by cosmetic procedures and beauty treatments. The problem is, those treatments are only acceptable if they're completely undetectable. Rumors like this — and the implication that Bullock needs to respond to clarify — makes it seem like there's something wrong with getting fillers, when the reality is that if she'd wanted to get them, that would actually have been totally okay. Though Bullock didn't get fillers or plastic surgery before the 2018 Oscars, maybe we should end the plastic surgery shaming so that women feel less of the need to reply to rumors like this in the first place.
