Akira Toriyama’s Sand Land manga is making a big push, after an anime movie was released last year and a game is set to be released later this year. The third prong of the unfolding Sand Land media empire is an anime series, and it now has a release date.

Disney – yes really, Disney – revealed that Sand Land: The Series will be launching on March 20, 2024. The first seven episodes will be released all at once on March 20, with subsequent episodes releasing weekly on Wednesday’s after that, according to ANN. The series will be released on Hulu in the US, and on Disney+ everywhere else under its Star branding.

The first half of the series is cut from scenes in the film, with new scenes added to expand on many scenes, while subsequent episodes will be all-new. The series is not expected to get a second season, but we’ve seen a lot beyond the manga in the upcoming game so we could see something extra if the new anime series is a hit.

Sand Land is a short manga series written and illustrated by Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama. It follows the demon prince Beelzebub – son of Lucifer – in a dried up world with very little water. Beelzebub teams up with a Sheriff to try and find a new source of water for humans and demonkind alike.

The manga ran for 14 chapters starting in mid-2000, and was collected into a single volume later that year. It was licensed by Viz Media for an English release in 2003, where it was praised for its short, sharp storytelling, cute art, and fantastic world building.

It comes shortly before the release of Bandai Namco’s Sand Land game, which is being developed by ILCA — a developer best known for Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, as well as One Piece Odyssey. The April release date for Sand Land was revealed in January in a new trailer, and so far it’s looking pretty great. We’ll have to see if it sticks the landing, as it looks like it has a lot going on, but Akira Toriyama fans are eating well either way.
