This San Francisco Museum Will Now Text You Art
As any true art aficionado will tell you, the experience of finding a piece of art that speaks to you can be quite personal...and, to be real, a little intimidating.
With all the different artistic styles out there and a multitude of art forms, how do you choose?
Perhaps, you could just let a text decide. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is making it a bit easier to explore your personal art style with its new #SendMeSFMOMA campaign.
Basically, US-based users can text the museum at 572-51 with the words "Send Me" along with a keyword, emoji, color, or mood. In return, you'll receive a personalized photo of art from among the museum's 35,000+ pieces along with its title, artist, and date.
Want to see what artwork goes along with your favorite color? We got a bright Chuck Bass self-portrait when we asked for "something purple."
You could even try texting your favorite room in your home to see how it translates in art form. We tried "dining room" and got a retro-looking diner.
Or if travel gets you inspired, send the museum your favorite cities. When we asked for "Paris", they gave us a photograph of a violin-playing street performer in a classic French beret.
In real life, personality (and in many cases your decor style) will likely dictate what art you gravitate toward. A perfectionist for example might be drawn to the detailed lines of a drawing, while a bubbly optimist might take to the vibrant hues of a watercolor. And in essence, the SFMOMA's system of curation works the same way.
Between Washington D.C's new Artechouse gallery, which popped up this summer and allows visitors to touch, step, even play with art, as well as a new exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario that brings classical artworks to life via app, it seems interactive art exhibits are the new norm.
When you think about it, it's actually an ingenious way to peruse art, especially for those of us who find it hard to make it through a museum's entire works in one day.
If you were to walk past each artwork currently on view at SFMOMA, you would need to walk almost seven miles, according to the museum's site. And that's not even counting the pieces currently in storage.
SFMOMA is only able to show about 5% of their total works at any given time. Since the museum's texting service also includes artworks not on display, that means you could be treated to a piece of art no one else has seen.
Either way, discovering what art inspires you just got a lot cooler.
