San Diego Humane Society's New 'Cat Aquarium' Is Causing a Splash Online

Being a pet in a shelter is never easy, but there are plenty of ways shelter staff, volunteers, and community members can make it a bit more bearable. From collecting donated blankets to introducing new enrichment activities, the smallest bit of fun and comfort can make a world of difference to a lonely dog or cat.

At the San Diego Humane Society, however, shelter animals have been enjoying a much bigger change--an entirely updated shelter! The shelter's new facilities have been blowing away potential adopters and social media fans alike, but volunteers started to wonder whether some of the animals were feeling left out, too. Luckily, their new 'cat aquarium' solved that problem while looking paw-sitively adorable, too!

On February 29, the Southern California humane society showed off the newest update to the cat enclosure, and fans love it as much as the kitties do!

OMG! I didn't know what to expect when I read the phrase 'cat aquarium,' but now it makes total sense. A few fish decorations that double as cat toys and tunnels make a world of difference! Each cat tower pillar looks a bit like seaweed waving in the current, too, though the best feature about the 'tank' is the cats themselves!

I agree wholeheartedly with viewer @snowdaisy, who said, "This is the third video I’ve seen of your facility, and I am blown away at how amazing it is." This animal shelter went above and beyond for their animals! They built entirely new spaces for both shelter dogs and shelter cats, but even potential adopters and video viewers benefit from the updates.

Just look at these sweet, relaxed cats! Those who visit the @sdhumanesociety to adopt a cat will be even more likely to come home with a new best friend when the kitties are happy and willing to visit. And more adoptions benefit everyone!

Adopting a Shelter Cat

Visiting a kitty at the cat aquarium is only step 1 in bringing home a furry friend. Before you can bring your new kitty home, you'll need to fill out paperwork, shop for cat supplies, and maybe even wait for your adoption application to be approved. Then, you'll have to think about introducing your rescue cat to their new home!

It's advised to let your new cat explore just one room of their home--preferably a small room like the bathroom. After a few days, they should begin to relax and show interest in exploring the house even further. Take baby steps! Rescued pets can become overwhelmed, so don't push them to take anything too quickly. Even if they're a well-socialized kitty who's spent time in a shelter like the San Diego Humane Society, they may need to take their time!
