San Diego Humane Society Successfully Releases Rehabilitated Bear Cubs Into the Wild

Recently, wildlife rehabilitators got to celebrate a joyous milestone when they successfully released three healthy bear cubs back into the wild last week. San Diego Humane Society's Ramona Wildlife Center raised and rehabilitated the orphaned black bear cubs for 9 months before they returned to the forest, though there are still two more cubs in their care.

This release was extra special for the Southern California team, mentioned NBC San Diego, as the orphaned bears were all found nearby in the San Bernadino National Forest. There was a larger team than usual gathered to celebrate the cubs, and we think it was the perfect sendoff for the young bears.

Just look at those speedy cubs go! There's no doubt in our minds about their well-being once we saw them race off. Clearly, the Ramona Wildlife Center took great care of them!

It's so sweet that the brother and sister cubs stuck together throughout this whole process, too, though that might be coming to an end. According to the North American Bear Associations, yearling cubs start life on their own around May or June, when mating season begins for their mother. So even if these furry siblings won't be together anymore, that's completely normal. It's bittersweet, but that's how it goes in nature!

All three orphaned cubs were brought to the wildlife center by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife in July 2022, so these babies are right on schedule with their peers. Their caretakers made sure to observe the animals from a distance so they wouldn't become too comfortable with humans, and they even had the bears forage for their own food. All in all--they should be ready to explore the world as the young independent bears they are. And it's all thanks to the Ramona Wildlife Center team!
