Samsung Unveils Galaxy S9 and S9+

Be the emoji you wish to see in the world.

Samsung knows firsthand that the way to consumers' hearts is through the camera. And judging by the first look at the flagship Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus this week at the Mobile World Congress, we're about to see far more aspiring pro photographers on social media once the devices officially hit shelves on March 16. Dolby-powdered surround sound speakers and edge-to-edge infinity display are just a few of its radical updates.

Like the human eye, the camera uses a smaller aperture to capture bright scenes and a wider one to capture dark, making for crystal clear footage. Its integrated DRAM memory chip means it can process four times as much data than before. The result? The most ridiculous slo-mo shots that could easily function as some sort of emotionally intense melted chocolate commercial (you know the ones). Stretching a blink of time into six seconds, the slo-mo shots record 960 frames per second. Unheard of.

Making augmented reality an official part of our everyday lives, you can turn yourself into an emoji directly through the camera setting and complete it with personalized gestures and voice messages. Spread the love on third-party apps like Facebook and Messenger. Be the emoji you wish to see in the world, and such.

Taking Apple's beloved portrait mode to the next level, the S9 and S9 Plus allow you to blur the background of an image after the fact. You know, just in case you need a new LinkedIn photo, STAT. But thanks to a very important Sephora and CoverGirl collab, the new smartphones aren't the only ones with a pretty face: Bixby, a voice-powdered digital assistant, allows you to try on makeup virtually and purchase it directly through the camera. Because leaving the house is for squares.

The S9 and S9 Plus will come in 5.8 and 6.2 inches respectively, available today (March 2) for preorder on their website and partner retail stores. And of course, the colors of the phone itself aren't anything to sneeze at: Along with your classic midnight black and titanium gray, you'll get coral blue and lilac purple. If only we could Instagram our actual phones.
