Samsung Announces New Galaxy S8 That Won't Shatter

Samsung just unveiled the ultra-rugged Galaxy S8 Active smartphone, which will be released on August 11.

The device, which is an AT&T exclusive, features a durable design and a military-grade shatter-resistant screen. Like the Galaxy S8 and S8+, this one is also water-resistant.

While it still sports a gorgeous 5.8-inch quad HD super AMOLED display, it's missing the elegant infinity edge curves we saw on the Galaxy S8 and S8+. Instead, it has a metal frame and bumper that helps it survive drops from up to 5 feet. The device's polycarbonate back is shock-resistant, and it won't crack like the S8 or S8+'s glass backing would.

The Galaxy S8 Active's internals are almost entirely the same as the S8 and S8+, but the phone is thicker and heavier. You still get the speedy Snapdragon 835 processor, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, and impressive cameras. What's most different is its larger 4,000mAh battery. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ feature smaller 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh batteries, respectively. This bigger battery should easily provide you with two days of use.

This new smartphone will cost you $28.34 each month in a 30-month payment plan, which is about $850 total. You can preorder it on August 8 in Meteor Gray or Titanium Gold. There's no word yet on if you can buy the phone outright to potentially use it on other carriers.
