Last we heard from wake surfer Sam Studee, he was fashioning a hunk of ice into a surfboard. The frozen craft actually worked surprisingly well – although it predictably melted almost immediately. This time, Studee has turned his attention to furniture. With the help of a hydrofoil, he managed to turn the humble coffee table into a wave-riding menace.

It’s actually not the first time surfers have turned to the furniture aisle and hardware store for inspiration. Back in 2018, Ben Gravy rode a wooden door in knee-high waves. A few years later, Austin keen rode a rather similar-looking coffee table behind a boat. Basically anything that’s fairly flat and buoyant is fair game for the meme-surfer.

The real innovation here is the addition of a foil to the stunt. The same lift and speed that infuriates surf lineups the world over allows pretty much any dumb shape to become a wave-riding apparatus. After all, who cares about hydrodynamics when you’re floating two and a half feet over the water.
