For Sam Smith, It’s a Very Liberace Christmas

Sam Smith sometimes adds a bit of drama to his wardrobe with a pair of red sequined heels, which he expertly employs to contrast with his sensible suits. More recently, though, Smith has been stepping into drastically different looks, indulging in a bit of fashion role play: he channeled peak Gloria Estefan with the super frilly skirt that he danced around in just last month.

Now the holidays have brought out yet another latent fashion persona: Liberace. Smith’s latest outfit finds him posing in front of a Christmas tree in clashing earth-toned stripes and paisley prints and a fur coat, all of which he topped off with a bejeweled Captain’s hat. It’s a festive ensemble fit for the perpetually flamboyant Mr. Showmanship himself, who became well known as much for his over-the-top stage outfits (feathers, sequins, and more) as he was for his skilled piano playing. It’s shaping up to be a very merry Liberace Christmas indeed.
