Sam Smith released their third studio album Love Goes in October 2020.
Because the ongoing COVID-19 crisis made it impossible for Smith to tour, they later released the live album Love Goes: Live at Abbey Road Studios in March 2021, which features songs from Smith's third album, as well as previous singles from their first two albums, In the Lonely Hour and The Thrill of It All.
Smith's Livestream concert, Sam Smith: Love Goes — Live At Abbey Road Studios, will be available to stream on Netflix starting on May 22.
Though they first gained attention after being featured on Disclosure's 2012 single "Latch," Sam Smith (who identifies as non-binary and genderqueer) truly reached star status after releasing "Stay With Me" in 2014. The song was the third single on Smith's debut studio album, In the Lonely Hour, and though it's been over seven years since the ballad first hit the airwaves, it's possible you still don't know the meaning of the powerful "Stay With Me" lyrics. In honor of of Sam Smith: Love Goes — Live At Abbey Road Studios, hitting Netflix on May 22, here's the story behind the popular bop.
According to Sam, the song "came all at once" while they were working with songwriters Tourist and Jimmy Napes in a Central London recording studio. "That's the way all my songs are written," Sam said of the sudden inspiration during a September 2014 interview with NME. “It came when we were in the studio; Will was on piano, playing those three chords, and Jimmy got on drums." And though Napes was the one to come up with the idea of "Stay With Me," Smith was the one who decided to make the song about a one-night stand.
"It's about the moment in the morning after a one-night stand, where the person you are with leaves your house, and you are left by yourself, and it's just a second, where you are just like, 'I wish, I wish,'" Sam explained to NME. "You don't even love them, you don't really fancy them that much — it's just nice to have someone in the bed next to you."
"Stay With Me" ended up winning best song of the year at the 2015 Grammys, and during their acceptance speech, Sam revealed that In the Lonely Hour was inspired by someone they used to date. "I want to thank the man who this record is about who I fell in love with last year," Sam told the audience. "Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys." That night, Sam also took home the awards for record of the year, best new artist, and best pop vocal album.
However, Sam has never revealed the name of that mystery man, and since Sam's pre-fame dating history is a bit of a mystery, fans may never know who broke the singer's heart. "I've never been in a relationship before," Smith told FADER back in May 2015. “I've only been in unrequited relationships where people haven't loved me back. I guess I'm a little bit attracted to that in a bad way. In the Lonely Hour is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn't love me back. I think I'm over it now, but I was in a very dark place."
Fortunately, Sam channeled that pain into inspiration and gave fans an unforgettable hit.
