Sam Heughan

Scottish actor Sam Heughan isn't afraid to wear a kilt the traditional way — even if that means going commando.

For seven seasons, the charismatic Scot has portrayed Jamie Fraser on Outlander, requiring him to wear a kilt more often than not. Heughan also has his own Scotch whisky brand and recently released his second book with former Outlander co-star, Graham McTavish, called Clanlands in New Zealand.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Heughan spoke about his recent projects and shared a TMI tidbit about what he didn't wear under his kilt in a certain photo.

As they were chatting, Fallon showed the actor a picture of him wearing a kilt while walking in New York City.

The talk show host then asked if people look at him differently when he wears a kilt, to which Heughan replied, "Honestly, in New York, I think they've seen it all. They don't care, do they?"

Fallon then pulled up another photo of Heughan and McTavish rocking kilts while posing on a glacier in New Zealand — eliciting a confession from the Scotsman.

"I claim to be the first person in commando on a glacier," Heughan said of the breezy experience. "I went all the way just to do that."

The talk show host and actor went on to discuss Heughan's book, Clanlands in New Zealand, a companion piece to the documentary series Men in Kilts.

They also talked about the quirky side jobs Heughan worked before he began regularly booking acting gigs.

"Oh boy, where to start," the actor told Fallon. "I delivered sandwiches by bicycle. I worked in Harrods, sold women's clothing."

Additionally, Heughan sold perfume and even worked as a barman at an Irish pub in Scotland.

"I wore a flat cap and a very dodgy accent," he said. "And I poured a terrible pint of Guinness!"

Judging by his memory of the experience, it's probably for the best that Heughan ditched the flat cap and stuck with kilts (with or without underwear), in the end.
