The Regency romance Mr. Malcom's List has been a long time coming. In 2019, director Emma Holly Jones initially made a short version of the film to secure funding for the feature, and now the longer iteration, which has been described as Bridgerton meets Pride and Prejudice, is set to premiere this summer.

Here's what we know so far about Mr. Malcom's List.

The movie is out now.

The story centers around Julia (Zawe Ashton) scheming for Mr. Malcom (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù) to receive the "comeuppance he deserves" through her friend Selina (Freida Pinto). Watch the trailer here:

Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù will star in the film as Mr. Malcom, London's most eligible bachelor looking for a bride who meets all his qualifications. "I was conscious of not color-washing the story," Dìrísù explains. "I didn’t want this to just be a white character played by a person of color. I wanted him to feel like a real, lived-in person."

"I never wavered," Jones told Vanity Fair of casting Dìrísù. "It’s him, or we don’t make the film. It’s the best decision I ever made. He’s handsome, he’s talented, he’s gentle, he’s complex."

Austen fans, take note: she also called him: "the new Mr. Darcy."

Freida Pinto will play Selina Dalton—a woman who helps her friend, Julia (Zawe Ashton) get revenge on Mr. Malcom after she falls short of his criteria. Pinto also incorporated her South Asian heritage into her character.

"They had to overcome the hurdles society has placed in front of them," Pinto says of Selina and Julia. "Selina’s story is really that of a country girl. How would she present that in society? No matter who you are or what race you belong to, your stories are still relevant."

Per Vanity Fair, rest of the cast includes Oliver Jackson-Cohen as "the sociable Lord Cassidy," Ashley Park as "the bubbly Gertie Covington," and Theo James as "the debonair Captain Henry Ossory."

Previously, actors Sam Heughan and Constance Wu were involved in the film, but they appear to have departed the picture.

The film is based on a book by the same name.

Suzanne Allain's Mr. Malcolm’s List originally came out in 2009, and serves as inspiration for the film.
