  • Sam's Club is opening its first cashier-less store in Dallas, TX

  • The store is a quarter the size of regular club locations, with an emphasis on food products

Grocery stores are on a mission to change the way we shop. In the last few years, we've seen more delivery options that allow you to get your groceries without leaving your home or your car, and, more recently, companies like Amazon have been experimenting with more streamlined in-store experiences. Sam's Club is among the newest to test the checkout-free waters with Sam's Club Now, a new store opening soon in Dallas, Texas.

Like at Amazon Go, shoppers will check in to the store through an app available on smartphones, the CEO of SamsClub.com explained in a blog post Monday. As you move throughout the store, you'll scan items on your phone before adding to your cart similarly to how you would while registering items for a wedding or baby registry.

When you're done shopping, head to the exit to "scan out" with a Sam's Club employee. If you've been in a super center, you know employees usually glance over your receipt anyway, so theoretically, this checkout process will be just as efficient-and by cutting out the line, even faster.

The app will have other helpful features like smart shopping lists that'll remember your preferences and usual buys, voice navigation so you can ask your phone "where's coffee?" and be directed to the right part of the store, and one-hour club pickup, if you'd rather place an order and come pick it up.

CNBC reports that for now, only Dallas will be home to this new type of Sam's Club store. At 32,000 square feet, it's about a quarter the size of an average club, with a more pared-down inventory, focusing on produce, meat, and alcohol.
