There’s A Salmonella Outbreak Linked To A Vegan Cheese Brand With 5 Recorded Illnesses

A salmonella outbreak in the United States is linked to select batches of a non-dairy cheese brand. Jule's Foods, a California-based company, has issued a recall on five different products from their portfolio.

The products that are being recalled are all packaged in six ounces and are made from cashews. Items include Jule's Cashew Brie (Classic), Jule's Truffle Cashew Brie, Jule's Black Garlic Cashew Brie, Jule's Artichoke Spinach Dip, and Jule's Vegan Ranch Dressing.

Traces of salmonella were detected by the California Department of Public Health during a routine check-up and Jule's is currently working with the Food & Drug Administration to isolate the source. The recalled items were distributed to grocery stores, many of which are independently owned, in Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Texas. Some of the items were sent directly to consumers as well. A full list of the grocery stores that carry the brand is listed on the Jule's website.

As a reminder, salmonella can lead to infection when it is consumed or handled. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated product and while many individuals recover easily the elderly, infants, and other individuals with weak immune systems may require further treatment.

Jule's has halted production of their cashew cheeses and other affected products for the time being while they address the issue. At the time of publication five infections related to the product have been recorded. If you have Jule's products in your possession dispose of them immediately and do not consume them.
