Salman Rushdie Strives to ‘Support Local Brown People’ at NYFW

You might expect to encounter noted author and academic Salman Rushdie on the campus of Emery University, where he teaches, or around New York City’s Union Square, where he lives. But hanging out at a fashion show? …Not so much.

But lo — on Wednesday morning, the man who gave the world Midnight’s Children and The Satanic Verses was sitting front row at designer Bibhu Mohapatra’s fall 2016 runway presentation.

As he explained to Page Six, the India-born Rushdie, 68, attended the show to “support a friend,” and, in turn, “support your local brown people.” (Bibhu, whose creations have been worn by Michelle Obama, is also originally from India and resides in NYC.)

And while he’s not much of a clothes horse, Rushdie did do his best to dress for the occasion. “That’s the kind of thing one should wear here,” he told Page Six, pointing to his blazer. “This is kind of Indian. It was made for me in Bombay. I just thought, ‘Be with the Indian people.’ ”

Sounds like he’s doing his best to accomplish that.
