Sally Fitzgibbons Stitched Up After Floater Wipeout (Clip)

Floaters can be deceptively dangerous.

They may look simple, and they often don’t score very high in competitive surfing unless it’s something truly spectacular (like Gabriel Medina’s airdrop from hell at Sunset Beach in 2016), but they’re pretty common culprits when it comes to surf injuries.

Just ask Sally Fitzgibbons…

The clip above comes from the recently-wrapped stop number three on the Challenger Series, the Ballito Pro Presented by O’Neill in South Africa. It shows Sally setting up for a pretty standard floater, nothing crazy or out of the ordinary, followed by an airdrop into the flats. Then, splat. It was a decent wipeout, no question, but still pretty average.

However, it wasn’t average.

Sally sliced up her shin in the process, requiring a couple stitches.

It looks like Sally was in good spirits, though, giving a thumbs up to the camera from the doctor’s office. And it likely won’t deter her campaign to get back on the Championship Tour. (She was relegated to the Challenger Series after the Mid-Season Cut.)

Messages of support flooded the comments section:

“Ouch hope you’re ok!!”

“Noooo shnappy!!!! I’ll go get the crutches, the wheelchair if ya need it and I’ll be bringing you all the coffee/Acai bowls you need ! You’re sorted”

“Speedy recovery!”

“Oh my goodness! Hope your recovery is fast! Don’t do that again lol!”

“Noooo!! ouch! I’m sorry sis!😭😭 praying for a quick recovery”

“Wheelchairs for your flight home”

Sally’s a professional; she’s been at this pro surfing game for a long time, and she’s a true athlete. A little scratch on the leg won’t put her out for long.

Heal up soon, Sal.
