This Is the Safest U.S. State for Solo Female Travelers in 2023, According to Research

It's time to book a trip to Vermont.

Women aren't waiting for an invitation from a travel partner to get out and explore the world.

According to statistics from Kayak, searches for single-person flights increased by 36 percent for travel in 2023 compared to 2022, while additional data from Industry Global News revealed that 85 percent of solo travelers registered with travel company Overseas Adventure Travel are women.

While more and more women are getting out in groups, with families, or on their own, safety remains top of mind. To help women find places where they can explore without fear, TrustedHousesitters conducted the 2023 Solo Female Traveler Report, unveiling the 10 best states that are ideal for those looking to explore on their own.

The report determined its rankings by looking into several factors, including a state’s internet speed (via data from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission), the state’s existing popularity among female solo travelers, and female safety, which it retrieved via data from the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program.

And after factoring in all the data, Vermont came out on top.

“The northeastern state offers women a perfect R&R getaway,” the website shared in its findings. “With the lowest rate of violence against women and the highest rate of women who report feeling safe in the nation, it comes as no surprise that the destination is already popular with solo female travelers.” The website added, “On TrustedHousesitters, women traveling alone make up more than half of all overnight stays in Vermont.”

Pennsylvania came in second thanks to its beauty, friendly locals, access to the internet, and high safety rating for women. Delaware came in at third, scoring high marks for its ranking as the “second safest state in the nation with the fourth-best internet speeds,” Trusted Housesitters noted. Rhode Island and Maryland rounded out the top five for the best states to travel.

The website also ranked states purely from a safety perspective, with Virginia, South Carolina, New Jersey, Maryland, and Idaho rounding the top five.

Those looking to travel internationally alone should look into Japan, Switzerland, and Slovenia, which ranked as the safest countries on Earth for solo travelers in a 2023 study. And, before you do jet off all alone, make sure to learn the 10 mistakes to avoid while traveling alone so you can focus on having a great time instead of worrying about a thing.
