Whether you're pregnant during the summertime, or you're headed to the beach for a babymoon, a swimsuit is likely to be in the equation. But once you're pregnant, it's important to know that your go-to hair-removal methods might be harmful to you and your baby.

Here's the scoop on safety, according to David Bank, M.D., director at The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery in Mount Kisco, N.Y.

Electrolysis

No research has yet shown that this is unsafe during pregnancy, Bank says.

Waxing

It's safe, but because you have more blood flowing to your skin during pregnancy—especially in your pubic area— you'll probably be more sensitive to tugging on your skin. Apply a soothing antiseptic lotion before and after waxing to help prevent stinging. "It might also prevent infection and reduce irritation and redness," he says. You can also try a Uni K Wax center near you, which uses a propriety wax formula specifically designed to reduce the ouch.

Depilatories

Avoid chemical hair-removal creams; there's a risk of possible chemical absorption through the skin, Bank says.

Shaving

Don't shave standing up, if you shave in the shower. Ask your partner to help you keep your balance and help you in and out of the tub.
