Sacramento Animal Shelter Makes Plea to Find Loving Homes for Their Longest Residents
Deciding when you're ready to bring home a new furry friend is no easy task, but that's only the first decision you'll have to make. You'll also need to consider what your ideal dog would be like! What kind of activities do you want to do together? What size of dog fits you best? How much exercise time can you promise them every day?
Don't forget to breathe! There's a lot to think about when browsing your local animal shelters for your perfect pet, and it's OK to ask questions, do your research, and take your time. But while you're at the shelter, take a minute to visit the residents with the longest stays. Even a short interaction could make a dog's day, and you just might meet someone you'd never expect!
In an April 11 TikTok video, Sacramento County's Bradshaw Animal Shelter gave their most seasoned residents their moment in the spotlight. Maybe it will inspire you to go meet one of them!
Aww! Each of these shelter sweethearts is as adorable as the last, and as the icing on the cake, their adoption fees have even been waived. Each and every one of these rescue dogs has a special story to tell, and now all they need is the right owner to tell it to.

For Siberian Huskies like Telluride, Reno, Charlie, and perhaps half of Oso, the shelter is a difficult place to be. Huskies are notoriously social and energetic, and it can be hard for them to meet their mental and physical stimulation needs from the inside of a kennel. Animal shelter volunteers do their very best to give every dog the outdoor time they need to thrive, but that can be difficult when shelters become overcrowded and understaffed.
Auri, who appears to be some kind of Mastiff breed, looks as happy as can be to say hello to a friend. That wide ol' smile could melt any heart! Sweet guy Dino has the cutest spotted markings, and he sits so politely, too. And handsome Pit Bull boy Darius? He comes with his own tuxedo!
Why Some Dogs Wait to Get Adopted
While it's relieving to see that this shelter's longest-waiting residents have been waiting for only a few months (some dogs wait over 100 days!), it's impossible not to notice a pattern. This video features only Huskies and Pit Bull breeds!
Sadly, these breed groups are some of the ones that are less frequently adopted or more frequently returned. Both of these dogs can be stubborn and energetic, and not every new dog owner is prepared to handle this. Every individual pup is unique, of course, but it's no fault of their own that they've been waiting so darn long!
