Sachin & Babi RTW Fall 2021

Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia’s tightly edited, strong fall collection reflects aspirational, but realistic, dress of the times.

“When we started our brand, our focus was contemporary, then we shifted to evening, and then even pre-pandemic, we had conscientiously made the effort to broaden this point of view and have day-to-evening. With the onset of this awful time, it catapulted that shift even faster,” remarked Babi Ahluwalia over Zoom.

Ahluwalia also mentioned that alongside their mainline collection dresses (perfect for the uptick of smaller, more casual weddings), their bridal line was booming — the brand is now a key partner for Anthropologie’s BHLDN.

The look: An effortless, transportable wardrobe from day to night: a robust lineup of chic separates and dresses and a slight bohemian, southwestern feel through playful new textures (lightweight, soft corduroy, quilting, vegan leather).

Quote of note: We have to pay attention to the times. As much as I want to be the ‘dreamy,’ we must make things aspirational, but a little in-reach in terms of the price ticket or sensibility. Fashion to me is something that has to be worn and embraced — in your closet, in my closet.”

Key looks: A saffron quilted jacket with tonal corduroy trousers; easy little dresses with special details (quilting, embroidered cutouts or lace-up ties) in vegan leather and corduroy; polished knits atop full, fluid skirts; a vegan leather jumpsuit with flutter sleeves.

The takeaway: Leaning into separates and daywear, the Sachin & Babi fall collection encapsulated a chic, effortless fall wardrobe.
