Ryan Reynolds Wants to Play Mac's Boyfriend on 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia'

Ryan Reynolds might have his hands full juggling the demands of making a new Deadpool movie and owning a soccer team with his pal Rob McElhenney (a journey that viewers can follow in the FX docuseries Welcome to Wrexham), but he'd like everyone to know he still has time to make an appearance on his friend's TV show.

In a recent BuzzFeed interview in which the pair discuss collaborating on Welcome to Wrexham, Reynolds responds to the question of whether he would ever consider guest-starring on McElhenney's long-running sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

"I'm personally offended that I've never been asked," he said. "The answer is hell yes. I have said, I would love to do a cameo, drinking a gin. Guy number four."

McElhenney replied that a cameo "can be arranged," and added: "Mac needs a boyfriend," referring to the character he plays, who came out as gay in the show's 12th season.

While much of the comedy in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia revolves around none of the morally bankrupt characters being capable of learning or maturing as people, Mac might be the exception: his evolution from toxic closet case to out and proud gay man culminated in one of the show's standout sequences, a lengthy and physically demanding dance performance in the Season 13 finale for which McElhenney underwent a dramatic body transformation.

"The joke wasn’t that Mac was gay, obviously. That would have been demeaning and offensive," McElhenney said at the time. "The joke was that he was in the closet, and he refused to come out and doubled down on his homophobia. It was just poking fun at the hypocrisy of that... We weren’t creating a gay character for comedic effect, that was there just to be gay and to be funny because he was gay, but a very complex, very disturbed, very fucked-up and awful character, who happens to be gay. And we ran with that."
