Ryan Reynolds gave a rare update about parenting his four kids, who he shares with wife Blake Lively, and we are taking notes.

“It’s genuine when I say I take a huge interest in their days and how things are going,” the Deadpool star told PEOPLE about his kids at an event in New York City yesterday. And when he isn’t actively listening to his kids (James, 8, Inez, 7, Betty, 4, and a baby born in Feb. 2023), Reynolds and Lively are focused on teaching them one important lesson: being self-aware.

“For me, the best time of my day is walking them to school and walking them back,” the Red Notice star explained. “I think as parents, we are so much better equipped to handle the rigors of childhood through our kids now than when I was a kid. It’s just totally different now. People are much more self-aware.”

“And that’s the thing we sort of hang our hat on the most is self-awareness with our kids,” he continued. “Not be happy, not be anything, just be self-aware and welcome everything in.”

It’s an interesting tactic, but we see where Reynolds is coming from! Staying aware about your kids’ feelings and lives (and teaching them how to be self-aware for themselves) is an important lesson. Reynolds shared these revelations at the Bring Change to Mind Revels & Revelations 11 event, where he was honored with the Robin Williams’ Legacy of Laughter Award.

At the event, he also opened up about going to see the Kansas City Chiefs play against the New York Jets earlier this month, where he and Lively were photographed with friends Taylor Swift, Sophie Turner, and Hugh Jackman.

“It’s a lot of fun,” he told Extra. “The NFL right now is reaching a kind of fever pitch that is usually only reserved for the Super Bowl, but here we are at the fourth or fifth game of the year and it’s already happening.”

Reynolds also talked about another fun fall tradition: dressing up for Halloween. “I don’t know why my kids want me to go as Lawrence Welk. It makes no sense to me. I can’t track their exposure to Lawrence Welk,” he told the outlet, referencing the American accordionist and host of The Lawrence Welk Show in the ‘50s. “I can track like a minimal amount for me, but not for them. I don’t understand … I’ll do anything they say. I’m not the boss.”

If there’s one thing we know as parents, it’s hard to be the boss when kids are involved!
