Ryan Murphy’s New Netflix Movie, Prom , Is a Theater Kid’s Wildest Dream

If you thought Glee was Ryan Murphy’s most theater-kid-friendly venture, take a deep breath and get ready for Prom. The movie, which is slated for release on Netflix in 2020, focuses on a group of Broadway singers who—in a bid for goodwill—champion an Indiana high school senior’s right to take her girlfriend to the prom.

As if that camptastic plot weren’t enough, the film is set to star Kerry Washington alongside Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman, Deadline reports. Meryl Streep as a washed-up Tony winner championing LGBTQ+ rights? Was this movie created specifically to distract Gay Twitter while Ryan Murphy wrests control of Congress?

Ariana Grande, Awkwafina, James Corden, Keegan-Michael Key, and Andrew Rannells will round out the cast of the film, for which the music and lyrics were written by Beguelin and Matthew Sklar. Yes, music and lyrics; in other words, we have a fighting chance at hearing Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman duet. My kingdom for a Mamma Mia reprisal!

Kerry Washington might be best known for playing cucumber-cool Olivia Pope on Scandal, but don’t count her out as far as musical prowess goes; she does a flawless Tina Turner impression and has even turned her talents to a Disney duet with Jordin Sparks.

There’s no word yet on who will be playing Emma, the film’s would-be prom attendee, but according to Deadline, a “nationwide search” has been underway to fill the role since June. In the meantime, you can always get your fill of Murphy goodness with Netflix series The Politician.
