Ryan Gosling Wore a Sweater Vest Again—This Time, With a Suit

The sweater vest is becoming the actor’s fashion staple.

The saying is three makes a trend—but wearing a sweater vest two times in a row still counts as a statement. That’s exactly what Ryan Gosling has just done: Back in August, the actor mastered the art of cool dad fashion when he stepped out in a Lacoste sweater vest, styling it casually with jeans and a white T-shirt. Now he’s been spotted yet again in the piece, only this time, he’s decided to wear it with a suit, proving the tricky item can, yes, even verge into red carpet territory.

Attending a photo call for his film First Man in San Sebastian, Spain, Gosling wore a classic blue single-breasted suit with a cozy sweater vest, which was printed with geometric cubes. Gosling may be onto something here. The polarizing piece actually had a moment on the Fall 2018 menswear runways: At Marni, wool vests were worn under smart overcoats, at Acne Studios they were sported as tops, and at Calvin Klein, they were more oversize and actually worn over suits. Here, a peek of the white T-shirt worn underneath gave Gosling’s look a cool, casual feel, as did his patent penny loafers. To bring a more youthful note (he is, after all, a Hollywood heartthrob), he accessorized with a single gold pendant.
