Ryan Gosling Gives a Rousing Defense of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig After Oscars Snubs

Ryan Gosling is just as shocked by those Barbie Oscars snubs as the rest of us.

The actor earned his third Academy Award nomination for his portrayal as Ken in last year’s blockbuster Barbie, but he lamented the lack of recognition for the film’s lead star and its director, Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig.

“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film,” he said in a statement released Tuesday. “No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit, and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

Gosling continued: “Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture, and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees.”

Barbie earned a total of eight nominations for this year’s Oscars ceremony. Though Robbie and Gerwig did not get nods in the Best Actress and Best Director categories, the two may still win gold statuettes. Gerwig and husband Noah Baumbach, who cowrote the film’s script, received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. And as a Barbie producer, Robbie still has a chance to snag the award for Best Picture.

Gerwig and Robbie have both been nominated for Oscars in the past, as well.

Gosling concluded his note by congratulating Barbie costar America Ferrera, whose performance in the hit film earned her first-ever nom for Best Supporting Actress.

“I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making such a groundbreaking film,” he wrote.

I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought I’d [be] saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.
