It's widely believed that Rupert Murdoch and his family inspired Succession, and in a new interview, Murdoch's granddaughter Charlotte Freud agreed with the assessment.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Freud said she is a fan of Succession. "It's totally accurate that it is based on my family. I loved watching it," she said. "I think my mum is very Shiv, which she disagrees with." Freud is the daughter Elisabeth Murdoch and Matthew Freud; Elisabeth is widely believed to be one of the key inspirations for Sarah Snook's Shiv Roy.

She added, "I f****** wish I'd had the Succession life. When I watch it, I say to my mum, 'Where's my helicopter?' It was the Tube for me."

Freud, who is one of 13 grandchildren of Rupert Murdoch, also said in the interview, "I've probably spent more time with Logan Roy than I have with my actual grandfather. I see him at Christmas. We don't hang out."

Brian Cox, who played Logan, told T&C last year that Logan is "not Rupert Murdoch. He’s certainly not Donald Trump, and he’s not Conrad Black." He added, "He is a self-made man, but there was something in his childhood that made him decide, 'Fuck it. It doesn’t work. None of it works.'"

Still, the connections between the Roys and the Murdochs are hard to ignore. In a New York Times story in 2018, it was revealed Murdoch's three children—Lachlan, James, and Elisabeth—watched Succession together.

Frank Rich, a producer on the series, told T&C, "We’ve had no direct feedback, and certainly not from him"—him being Rupert Murdoch. He continued, "But some people in that constellation, through a game of telephone, have indicated that they find the show quite interesting. We’ve certainly heard that a couple of people in that family, whether by marriage or otherwise, find it amusing, and have their own views on how closely characters might resemble members of the family."
