On Running Just Launched a Guilt-Free, Eco-Friendly Sneaker Subscription Service
On Running makes those type of sneakers that when you see someone wearing them out for a run, you know that they get it. They know! You don't come into the world of On Running sneakers by accident. The company has zeroed in on perfecting the perfect running shoes for different conditions, and it is not messing around when it comes to optimal comfort and performance.
Although the brand's main focus has been running, On Running has never been much about staying in its lane. Just because running is its heart and soul doesn't mean it's a one-passion pony: Today, On Running is launching a subscription-based service for its sneakers with a heavy focus on sustainability. The service, called Cyclon, is all about cradle-to-grave sustainability, meaning the shoes cause minimal environmental damage from their creation to their end.
If you're just getting into sustainability, this is a really easy way to get involved—and provides good notes for keeping in mind for other shop-able areas. It's easy for brands to throw around terms like "recycling" and "sustainability" while still keeping sketchy practices around. But lifecycle services are a keyword worth knowing. That means the brand is not just taking responsibility for how the product is made but how it is disposed of, too.
Here's how it works: Cyclon is meant to get you in the loop of trying out new eco-friendly products from the brand and to have you recycle what you're done with. When you have run the life out of the shoe, send it back to the brand.
"The Cyclon shoe doesn't need to be disassembled before recycling," says On Co-Founder Caspar Coppetti. "The whole product can be shredded and ground without an extra step." Early on, the materials will be used to make the Speedboards (between the midsole and the upper). The end goal? Making all new Cyclon shoes from recycling old ones.
Not only is the system set up for getting as close to zero-waste as possible, but the brand is also coming out with a sneaker that fits the theme: a totally recyclable, lightweight running shoe made from...beans. Yep. Fifty percent of the Cyclon sneaker is made from castor beans.
"Cyclon is made of high-performance polyamide compounds, [which] will be recycled many times over," says Coppetti.
Sign up for the service with a $29.99 deposit to be the first in line for those Cyclon sneakers, which will only be available to subscribers in late 2021. The price of the subscription will be $29.99 per month, with a six-month commitment.
Essentially, On is doing the heavy lifting of tech advancement in footwear, sustainability, and even shopping, which you will have to do virtually none of with a subscription. All you really have to do, of course, is the actual running.
