Last February I was laid off after eleven years with the same company. I had always wanted to run but I allowed anxiety to weigh me down with stress, abuse of alcohol and a pack-and-a-half smoker. When I got home I kissed my wife and our youngest daughter and said, “I’m going for a run.” I treated the time “off” as a training time: two-a-days, no smoking, trying and sometimes failing at cutting back on the drink. I dropped 55 pounds and was able to finish my first half marathon in March this year. I will finish my first marathon in January here in Houston.

I crave knowledge. RW+ does a great job of letting me know about new gear, nutrition and recovery. I think RW+ has given me the tips to not only become a better runner but prevent injury.

I run to remind myself that habits create positivity. I try to tell myself with every run that you are building on something every time you go out. When I race, I focus on trying to reach a bit more. The overall better feelings help me deal with my anxiety issues and create a better self.

I love to run in the early morning. In Texas, we run when it is comfortable. I sometimes have to embrace the treadmill. I have a six, nine and 12 mile loop in the neighborhood by our office. It provides plenty options when it comes to challenging your focus and push.

I have been devoted to the Nike Vomero series but I am trying out the new Brooks Ghost. I have signed up with Tracksmith’s Hare A.C. I look at their “beat your PR” as a $100 bounty I put on my old self. I will collect this year.

I have five bucket list marathons: Houston ( I run in 2020), Chicago, Boston, New York and Tokyo.

I will run them all.
