I’ve been running marathons for 20 years. The training requires discipline that filters into other areas of my life. If I have to get a workout in, I have to get other parts of my life scheduled and complete too. In the past few years, I’ve worked hard at getting faster. I’m working with a coach who pushes me. It’s made me more fit and I feel good about that.

Gear reviews and training tips are great but I really like stories about other runners, their challenges and accomplishments.

I started running marathons after my first child died suddenly and I needed an outlet for my grief. Every few years I commit to a charity and run in her name: Run for Ripley. Over the years we’ve raised more than $50,000 for various groups. The fundraisers allow me to share her story which is such a big part of who I am.

I have to squeeze in runs, either first thing or after work. Last night I didn’t get started until after 10 p.m. Cold and dark but I make sure to wear reflective gear and use a headlamp or flashlight.

I live on a mile-long point of land sticking into Long Island Sound and most of my short runs and speed work are a series of laps around neighborhood streets. Long runs are often on the rolling, curvy roads of Fairfield County, CT. When my schedule allows I love to run in Central Park after work. I run alone most of the time, so just being around all the other runners brings some extra motivation.

Nike Pegasus. I have run in Pegasus almost exclusively forever. The fact Nike does annual updates works perfectly with my need to get a new pair.

Since turning 50, I have knocked 30 minutes off my marathon PR. After years of circling 3:45, I ran a 3:15 in Berlin this year. I am targeting 3:10 in my next marathon, Tokyo in March. Goal: break 3:00. Someday.
