Running has long been a part of my life. Running as a teenager helped frame my determination for addressing challenges in life. It helps me process, analyze, and prepare for not only physical athletic challenges but provides so much mental stamina. My dad was my first and biggest fan. I remember when I was a teenager, he’d take me out for a “four mile run” until I realized he never had plans for four; he took me out for 8+ miles. He would giggle and say the only way he could still beat me is if we went longer. Seven years ago he was involved in a life-threatening car accident which left him paralyzed with a traumatic brain injury. Every day we still have him is a blessing. His love for running was pure joy and I will always treasure the runs we shared together. Now my runs have more purpose—to make him proud. I know the pain I experience is temporary for the greater benefit of my own long-term health.

I am a subscriber to the magazine and found myself wanting more resources on topics ranging from nutrition, recovery, and getting more immediate fun facts!

I have a demanding job and four kids so running is time for myself. I returned to more serious training about five years ago. Of course I run to manage my weight and stay healthy, but I still want to go after a few PRs. In 2018 I joined the DWRunning team. I have a great coach, Dan Walters, who has weekly calls with me and offers other creative ways to engage the team. I have awesome teammates to keep me pushing forward! I love that exhausted yet satisfied feeling after a hard run at threshold pace. You can feel the progress building.

Most often I run in my local neighborhood or on a prairie path but when possible I meet with others from the team. My favorite routes are while running on vacation. I love running by the ocean and also in northern WI, which we travel to annually. The scenery is peaceful and offers plenty more hills than I have at home. With almost no traffic, I am left alone to appreciate the deep woods, hear the birds, and yes, I do have to swat at those pesky deer flies!

My go-to is the Brooks Adrenaline GTS right now.

In my senior year of high school my XC team won the state meet and subsequently my senior year of college my XC team won nationals. My daughters share a love for running and run competitively too (no, I can’t keep up with them!). I have also found bike riding to be super enjoyable and completed my first century ride last summer. That is my longest endurance activity yet!

2020 was a tough year due to both injury and health issues. I’m starting to rebuild carefully and slowly and, if we are lucky to see racing return, I am aiming for the Boston marathon later this year (I qualified in Jan. 2020 just before the pandemic hit).
