I started running in 2015 when my daughter talked me into a 5K race. I guess it caught on, since I have continued to run regularly, and have completed many races including four half marathons and two of the world major marathons (New York 2017 and Chicago 2019). I was scheduled to run Berlin this year, but of course COVID-19 had other ideas!

I am very grateful that running has become an important part of my lifestyle. Especially now that I’m retired, it gives me a goal and incentive to keep active and healthy. Many years ago, I would never have imagined that someday I would enjoy running so much. Pre-retirement, it was a fantastic way to alleviate work-related stress; now I tend to stress if I can’t get out for a run! I definitely intend to use running as a means to slow the aging process as long as possible! I am hopeful that our children and grandchildren will follow my example as they get older... this may actually be my main incentive to keep running!

In the last few years, I’ve become a student of everything running. I read anything I find on the topic, and therefore find membership in RW+ very useful. I enjoy learning about the science of running, training tips, running shoe theory, and nutrition.

My ideal run is early morning on a rural country road! I have run through farmland to the sounds of roosters crowing. I have run along the ocean with waves crashing and eagles flying overhead. And I have run on forest roads and encountered a mother and baby moose!

When I started running, I thought minimalist shoes were the answer, but quickly developed knee issues, and realized some padding was important! Now, I favor Hoka shoes for that reason. I also use a Stryd foot pod which enables me to use the virtual running app Zwift on the treadmill during the tough Canadian winters! It makes treadmill running much more tolerable; even somewhat fun! However I will always prefer outdoor running, whenever possible.

I am terrible at following a healthy diet! I know what I should or shouldn’t eat, but have terrible will power for avoiding junk !

My healthy pre-run snack is often a large spoonful of peanut butter .

My running goal is to continue running marathons; if possible the world majors. I have a reserved spot for Berlin 2021, assuming it goes ahead. I eventually would like to tackle New York again, since it was my first, and beat me up pretty good!
