Running hasn’t simply “changed” me; it saved my life! I started running track in 7th grade, 35 years ago. When things were hard at home, I found freedom and friendships on the Notre Dame Middle School track team. We broke a record in the 4x4 relay that year, and that was when I realized what could be accomplished when you worked hard on a team at something you love.

I joined RW+ for the sense of community and inspiration needed some days when it is hard to lace up and get out the door.

Reading the success stories of others motivates me. I am also “a little” competitive, so when my husband goes out for long runs, I know I need to show up and get out, too. But mostly running makes me feel happy. After my son was born, I suffered postpartum depression. When things seemed very bad, my husband knew exactly what to do: he would take the baby (now 17!) and say, “Aimee. Go for a run.”

I’ve also realized how much I appreciate the running community for coming together for the common good, and becoming a collective group of activists for protecting immigrants (IRIS), organizing virtual fundraisers for feeding the hungry in our communities (Run4CT), and supporting the Black Lives Matter Movement (#IRunWithAhmaud). I have proudly participated in all of these initiatives.

I run in my neighborhood: a 5 1/2 mile loop most days, past the homes of my friends, through the gorgeous Stanley Quarter Park, down past the Central CT State U campus where I teach. When I am very fit, I can do the loop twice. It features two long hills and two gorgeous boulevards, a war monument (Iwo Jima), and the most beautiful gardens you will find in the city.

Oh, so many! I love my Pride Bombas socks! I love the tag on my laces that gives identifying information in case anything goes amiss. I love my Sony headphones and ancient iPod with a 90 minute playlist I listened to 18 years ago, while pregnant; I love my Hartford Marathon tee shirt from a Mother’s Day run years ago now. It says: Moms Run the World.

I swam naked in Philip Roth’s pool. That usually comes up—haha. Also, my son plays soccer at a very high level—for the New England Revolution II team (a USL team). In fall, he will be a student athlete at Stanford. He has made appearances as goal keeper for the US Youth National Team. People are usually surprised that two english professors have raised such an intense and competitive athlete. But then I remind them that I have been running all my life.

A 1:12 half marathon.
