Run for Fun: Strengthening glutes and pelvic floor

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – In this week’s episode of Run for Fun, we discuss the importance of pelvic floor and glute strength for runners.

Many runners don’t realize the importance of the glute muscles to power the run. These large muscles also help to stabilize the runner and can help prevent injury. While you’re running you are actually balancing on one leg at a time, and building up the muscles that can help stabilize you will make the run stronger.

Annemarie Fullem is a physical therapist and is also certified in pelvic floor therapy. She joins Leigh Spann and Coach Maria to discuss the sometimes-uncomfortable topic of pelvic floor strengthening. When the pelvic floor is weak, it can cause incontinence, especially during exercises that involve jumping.

Fullem breaks down exercises that help strengthen both the glutes and the pelvic floor to help running remain a fun activity for many years. She also discusses how posture can impact these muscles.
